Providence, History, and Evangelical Missions
In a slight departure from the overall format of the Woodbridge Conference, Dr. Erwin Lutzer delivers a homily in honor of Dr. Woodbridge in which he outlines a biblical philosophy of history. Stating that Christians believe history is God’s story and that he uses it for his purposes as in Deuteronomy 8, Dr. Lutzer offers three aspects of a biblical philosophy of history. History must include (1) a reflection upon the past where we learn about God, (2) an application of the lessons from the past to the present, and (3) a connection of the past with the future. God himself and God’s Word connect the past and future, according to Lutzer. Though the future is uncertain to us, God is there.
Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer has served as Senior Pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago since 1980. He is an award-winning author of more than twenty books, a celebrated international conference speaker, and the featured speaker on three radio programs: The Moody Church Hour, Songs in the Night, and Running to Win. These programs are available on the Moody Broadcasting Network, the Bible Broadcasting Network, Trans World Radio and many Christian radio stations around the world. He and his wife, Rebecca, live in the Chicago area and are the parents of three married children and have seven grandchildren.
